Leadership

Below you can find examples of some of the activities that I have engaged in to develop as a leader and professional whilst attending NC state.

Parent University

On May 1st 2018 I led a Parent University event at my school. This involved presenting my idea to my Administration and showing them my plan. I then organized an 'un-conference' for parents to attend. I organized representation from all grades to hose a 25 minute information session. The event was well attended and parents were very appreciative for the opportunity to learn more.

N.C Service Learning Coalition

In April I attended an un-conference hosted by the NC Service learning coalition. I was able to network with lots of people and learn more about service learning. I do have some experience with service learning and enjoyed getting more ideas to try with my students. I enjoyed the experience so much that I was encouraged to apply to join their board and was accepted. I am looking forward to being on the board, spreading information about service learning and developing myself further as a leader.

Facilitating a book study group

Awakening the sleeping giant

Whilst reading this book in my leadership class I reflected that in Chapter 4 (p.81) one of the application challenges is to use the Factors Relating to the Uniqueness of Teacher Leaders to reflect on a teacher who is reluctant to join in change in the school. I can think of one teacher that I would like to work on with this. It asks what I might do to rekindle their passion or engage them in continuous improvement efforts of the school? This is interesting as I never really thought about what I could do in this situation and want to help my school.

Needs Assessment and Strategic Plan

A PD plan for my school

The needs assessment I conducted at my school was focused around the need for professional development in teaching literacy. This topic was chosen as a result of conversations I had recently had with my team around a professional development session we had recently attended. Professional development keeps teachers informed on new research on how children learn, emerging technology tools for the classroom and new curriculum resources. The needs assessment I conducted at my school was focused around the need for professional development in teaching literacy. Based on the data collected, the areas that staff feel they need most support with were Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners (45.5%), Incorporating Literacy and PBL (31.8%), Incorporating Technology in Literacy (31.8%), and Using Assessments/Data to Inform Literacy Instruction (31.8%). My suggestion was that during our school's monthly study teams we set up workshops for the four areas and allow the teachers to each choose the one that most pertains to them.
